Meet Simon, Mechanical Design Engineer at Magnax – Traxial
Simon’s path to Magnax started before he even graduated — while designing an EV sports car for his mechanical engineering and industrial design thesis, he reached out to Magnax to consult on the drivetrain. After graduation, the two sides stayed in touch, and the rest is history.
Now based in our Kortrijk office, Simon translates simulation data into real, producible motor assemblies — bringing engineering precision and a genuine creative streak to everything he touches. We sat down with him to talk about how he got here, what his work actually looks like, and what drives him outside the office.
What’s your background, and what led you to Magnax?
I come from a slightly different background, combining industrial design with mechanical engineering. That has kept me creative and given me the reflex to look beyond just my own department.
A good product has to work for everyone involved, not only the end user, but also the people who manufacture it, assemble it, sell it and support it. Working in Magnax has given me the chance to be involved in all of those aspects.
What does your role actually involve day-to-day?
Every day is different. I move between designing new motor and EDU concepts, solving packaging and manufacturing challenges, running mechanical simulations and optimizations, and turning rough ideas into something we can actually build and test. I also create visuals and help with supply chain and voice-of-customer. That variety is one of the best parts of the job, because the constant cross-pollination between disciplines that I feel is making me grow exponentially.
How do you enjoy your free time?
I enjoy anything to do with driving, especially when it involves going sideways. I try to stay active and train hard, and I’m also working on my automotive design skills through sketching and 3D modeling. I enjoy philosophy as well, and read whenever I have the time.
Seeing something go from a seemingly impossible idea into something that materializes right in front of your eyes, then holding it in your hands, never gets old.
